Mudjacking is the traditional method for lifting a sunken concrete slab: a cement based slurry pumped beneath the slab to fill the void and raise it back to grade. Mudjacking: how it works and when it's the right call.
The slurry is mixed on-site in a portable pump unit, blending Portland cement and washed concrete sand with potable water until the mix reaches the consistency of pancake batter. Holes 1 to 2 inches in diameter are drilled through the slab, typically spaced every 3 to 5 feet depending on slab thickness and void geometry. A steel injection nozzle is threaded into each hole and the slurry is pumped under 50 to 200 PSI of pressure. Lift happens in two stages: the slurry first fills the void from the bottom up, taking the path of least resistance into hollow pockets where soil has consolidated or washed away, then continued pumping pressurizes the slurry against the underside of the slab to generate upward force. Once the slab reaches target elevation, the nozzle is removed and the hole is patched with concrete grout. Cure time runs 24 to 48 hours before normal load can be reapplied. The cured slurry weighs roughly 100 pounds per cubic foot, substantially heavier than polyurethane foam. That added weight is one of the main reasons Epp Foundation Repair uses foam injection instead: on soil that is already compromised, adding a heavier fill column can work against the goal of a stable, lasting lift.
