How it works

Slab Jacking: how it works and when it's the right call.

The mechanics of slab jacking are similar regardless of injection material: drill ports through the sunken slab, inject material under pressure into the void beneath, fill the void, generate upward pressure against the underside of the slab, and monitor lift in real time until target elevation is reached. Epp Foundation Repair's crews use polyurethane foam, a two-part closed-cell resin injected through 5/8 inch ports, expanding 20 to 30 times its liquid volume in roughly 15 seconds and curing to 4 pounds per cubic foot and 6,000 psf compressive strength. Mudjacking, described here for comparison since homeowners researching slab jacking often see the term used interchangeably, uses a wet mix of Portland cement, washed sand, and water injected through 1 to 2 inch holes, curing over 24 to 48 hours to a permanent fill weighing roughly 100 pounds per cubic foot. Epp does not install mudjacking. Foam wins on residential precision, faster cure, smaller ports, and lighter load, which is why it is the only method Epp's crews carry on the truck.

Installation Process

How we install slab jacking.

Step 01.Inspection & Fixed-Cost Estimate

A specialist visits the site, measures the settlement with a laser, evaluates void depth, identifies the suspected water source, and assesses soil bearing capacity. Once the scope is confirmed, Epp provides a written fixed-cost estimate for polyurethane foam injection.

Step 02.Port Drilling

5/8 inch ports are drilled at 4 to 6 foot spacing. Drilling takes 20 to 30 minutes on a typical residential slab. Dust-controlled rotary hammers minimize cleanup. Port count is calculated based on slab thickness, void volume, and target lift height.

Step 03.Injection & Real-Time Lift Monitoring

Two-part polyurethane is pumped through heated hoses, mixed at the gun, and injected under pressure. Lift is monitored on a laser level to 1/16 inch accuracy, moving between ports in a calculated sequence to lift the slab evenly across its surface.

"The single biggest mistake I see homeowners make is calling for a quote on lifting before anyone has looked at what's under the slab. The void tells the method. A 4-inch void is one job. A 24-inch column of hydroconsolidated loess is a completely different job with the same name. Pricing without the inspection is guessing, and the guess is wrong about a third of the time."
