Water on the inside of a window can have two very different causes. In winter, water can form on any window glass that is colder than the dew point of the indoor air, whatever is happening in the basement. That kind of condensation is usually cosmetic. In other homes, the basement air holds enough moisture that damp air rises through the house, and the windows upstairs are the visible end of a basement water problem. Four Signals That Point to a Basement Problem Rather Than a Window Problem

Condensation heavier on basement windows than on the floors above
When basement windows collect more condensation than the windows upstairs, the basement air may be holding extra moisture, often from water getting in through the walls or floor. Windows closer to the moisture source tend to collect more condensation.

Musty odor or visible mildew on basement walls along with the window condensation
A concurrent musty odor or visible mildew growth can mean the basement air has stayed damp for a long time. Mold and mildew tend to grow where humidity stays high, so visible growth suggests the dampness has been there for a while.

Window condensation appears in every season, not only in deep winter
Condensation that appears only in the coldest part of winter often comes from cold glass and is usually cosmetic. Condensation on the inside of windows in spring, summer, or fall more often points to a moisture source inside the house, and the basement is a common one.

Condensation on cold glass from normal winter heating (cosmetic)
Heated indoor air in winter carries some moisture, and water can form on any window glass that is colder than the dew point of that air. It is more common on windows with one pane of glass, windows with two panes in aluminum frames, and windows along outside corners. This kind of condensation usually comes from the window itself and is usually cosmetic.

Basement humidity rising through the floor system
Water that gets into a basement through cove joints, hairline wall cracks, or unsealed slab edges can raise the moisture in the basement air. Air moving up through the house can carry that moisture through the floor system to the main and upper levels.

Loess and clay regional moisture loading (NE, IA, KS, MO)
Regional soil moisture is a primary driver of basement humidity across the four state territory. Loess soils across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa hold water after a rain and release that moisture slowly through the foundation wall. Expansive clay across northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri stores and releases water similarly.

High indoor humidity from poorly vented bathrooms, dryers, and cooking (cosmetic)
A bathroom fan that vents into the attic instead of outdoors, a clothes dryer with a disconnected vent, or a kitchen exhaust hood that recirculates air instead of venting it outside can all add moisture to the whole house in winter. That moisture alone can cause window condensation, whatever the basement conditions are.

What puts water against basement walls in Nebraska and Iowa?
Rain and melting snow soak into the soil around a basement. When that water cannot drain away, it can press against the walls and floor and find a way in through cracks and joints.

What kind of soil is around Lincoln and Omaha?
Based on USDA soil survey data for Lancaster County (Lincoln) and Douglas County (Omaha), clay is the main soil type in both counties. The survey rates Lancaster County high and Douglas County moderate for shrink swell. Clay can swell when it gets wet and shrink as it dries, so a slab or foundation on clay can move up and down with the seasons. The soils that cover the most ground in Lancaster County are Wymore and Aksarben, and in Douglas County they are Contrary and Marshall.
Loess, the wind deposited silt common in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, can lose strength and settle when it gets wet. Water can reach it from runoff, a plumbing leak or a downspout that empties next to the house.
How does freezing weather affect footings and basement walls?
In Lincoln and Omaha, soil near the surface can freeze and thaw many times between fall and spring. Each city's building code sets a frost line depth, which is the minimum depth below finished grade for a footing. It is 36 inches in Lincoln and 42 inches in Omaha. Supports that sit above that depth, such as some porches, stoops and chimney footings, can move as the ground freezes and thaws.
Horizontal cracks in a basement wall are more often linked to pressure from the soil outside the wall than to settlement. Wet soil pushes harder against a wall than dry soil, and soil that freezes against the wall can add to that pressure.
