Diagnosis First
Interior waterproofing captures water after it reaches a basement wall and routes it outside through drain tile, a sump pit, and a pump, with a vapor barrier directing minor seepage to the drain. Epp Foundation Repair recommends it when hydrostatic pressure is pushing water through the wall itself, not when a downspout or grading issue outside is the real source.

And the diagnosis comes first, not the system. A single downspout dumping 800 gallons of roof runoff against a foundation corner during one Nebraska thunderstorm will overwhelm any waterproofing system Epp could install. Epp Foundation Repair will tell you that before recommending interior drain tile. Epp Foundation Repair has waterproofed Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri basements since 1994, and the most common honest answer on a wet-basement call is that the source is fixable upstream of the wall. When the source is hydrostatic pressure. Water in the soil column itself pressing against the wall below grade. An interior waterproofing system becomes the right tool. That distinction is the entire job.
Interior waterproofing does not waterproof the wall. Water still reaches the wall. The interior system captures that water at the wall-floor joint, channels it through a perforated pipe buried at footing depth around the inside perimeter, drains it into a sump pit, and discharges it outside through a sump pump. A wall vapor barrier (8-mil or 12-mil reinforced poly) on the wall face directs minor seepage down to the drain channel rather than into the room. The difference between interior and exterior waterproofing is the difference between managing the symptom and addressing the cause. Exterior waterproofing. Excavating the outside of the foundation and applying a membrane. Prevents water from reaching the wall at all. Interior waterproofing accepts that water will reach the wall and routes it back outside before it enters the room. For most wet-basement calls Epp takes in Lincoln, Omaha, interior is the right answer. Not because it is the better waterproofing method, but because the cost, disruption, and landscape damage of exterior excavation is not justified by the water volume, and a properly designed interior system will keep the floor dry for the life of the home.
Four conditions point to interior over exterior. Older brick or stone foundations where excavation backfill removal would damage fragile mortar joints. Common in pre-1940 Lincoln and Omaha homes. Lots with close-set neighbors, mature trees, or expensive hardscape (decks, patios, retaining walls) where exterior excavation cost would exceed the membrane benefit. Moderate seepage volume. Wall sweating, water-cove at the floor joint, occasional puddle after heavy rain. Rather than active streaming leaks. Homes where the source has been identified and corrected upstream (grading, downspouts, gutters) and the residual hydrostatic pressure needs management.
Eastern Nebraska and western Iowa sit on loess soil over glacial till. A stratigraphy that holds water in a perched water table 4 to 8 feet below grade through most of spring. After snowmelt or a 2-inch rain event, that perched water rises against the foundation wall and applies hydrostatic pressure measured in hundreds of pounds per square foot. Any crack, any failed mortar joint, any unsealed cold joint between footing and wall becomes an entry point. The Kansas and Missouri clay belt adds expansive clay with plasticity indexes above 30. Clay that swells 15% by volume when wet, contracting equally when dry, and applies cyclical lateral pressure that opens new entry points every wet-dry season. Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri run through 50+ freeze-thaw cycles per winter, each cycle widening any existing crack. The result: many homes Epp inspects across the territory show some level of basement seepage, even when grading and gutters are correct.
A full-perimeter interior waterproofing system from Epp Foundation Repair has six components installed in this sequence. Trench and pipe. Crews break and remove 12 to 18 inches of slab around the interior perimeter. Typically 8 to 14 hours for a 1,800 square foot basement. The trench reaches footing depth, and 4-inch perforated PVC pipe is set in 3 to 4 inches of washed pea gravel. Sump pit. A 22-gallon polyethylene sump basin is set at the low point of the perimeter loop, typically a corner. The basin sits below floor grade so all interior drain tile drains to it by gravity. Sump pump. Epp installs a 1/3 horsepower cast-iron submersible primary pump with vertical float switch and check valve. Discharge runs through 1.5-inch PVC to an exterior daylight point at least 10 feet from the foundation. Wall vapor barrier. 8-mil or 12-mil reinforced polyethylene is fastened to the upper wall from sill plate to floor, terminated into the drain channel below the new concrete. Minor wall seepage runs behind the barrier to the drain rather than into the room. Concrete restoration. Trench is backfilled with stone and capped with 4 inches of new concrete to floor level, sloped to drain. Inspection ports. Cleanout access at each corner allows future inspection of the pipe without breaking floor. ## What Epp Does Not Do. And Who Does
Epp Foundation Repair installs the interior system, sump pit, sump pump, and vapor barrier. Three adjacent scopes Epp does not perform. Source correction outside the foundation. Re-grading the yard, replacing gutters, installing downspout extensions beyond 6 feet, removing trees with intrusive root systems. Is landscape contractor or handyman scope. Epp will identify what needs to happen and refer to qualified local contractors, but those line items do not appear on an Epp invoice. Mold remediation inside finished walls. If a finished basement has microbial growth behind drywall, that is mold remediation contractor scope and must happen after the waterproofing dries the cavity, not before. Finished basement restoration after the waterproofing trench cuts through carpet or framing is general contractor scope. Epp will leave the basement structurally watertight and ready for restoration but does not rehang drywall or replace flooring.
Don't install an interior system without diagnosing the source. About one in three wet-basement calls Epp receives diagnoses to a fixable upstream issue. A single negatively graded patio, a clogged gutter feeding one corner, one downspout discharging at the foundation. An interior system on top of an uncorrected source is not wrong, but it is overkill, and Epp will say so on the Customized Repair Estimate. Don't install an interior system when the wall itself is failing structurally. A bowing or actively cracking wall under hydrostatic pressure needs reinforcement. Carbon fiber, wall anchors, or push piers. Before any waterproofing system, because sealing a moving wall just relocates the leak within a season. Epp inspects the wall condition before quoting the system and includes any structural correction in the scope.

Saturated clay backfill, frequent winter freeze-thaw cycling, and heavy annual precipitation drive hydrostatic pressure against basement walls in ways that drier or warmer regions never see. Generic waterproofing approaches fail here because they ignore the soil and climate that put water against the wall in the first place.
Most of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa sits on wind-deposited loess, a fine, silty soil 10 to 200+ feet deep. Loess holds its structure when dry but loses cohesion rapidly when saturated. After a wet spring, saturated loess expands against foundation walls. After a dry Nebraska summer, it contracts, pulling away from footings, creating voids beneath slabs, and producing the vertical and diagonal settlement cracks we see most frequently on the Lincoln, Omaha, Council Bluffs corridor.
The Marshall and Sharpsburg loess series, dominant across the eastern Nebraska service area, are particularly prone to this cyclical volume change. Homes built in the 1960s, 1980s on uncompacted loess backfill show the highest incidence of progressive settlement cracking in our inspection data.
Eastern Nebraska's 36, 42" frost penetration depth means the soil below grade freezes and thaws 60, 80 times per year. Each cycle applies lateral pressure to basement walls. A wall that holds through ten cycles can fail in the eleventh if drainage has worsened, backfill has settled, or the wall was already at capacity. Horizontal cracks near the soil grade line are almost always a freeze-thaw story in this region.
In eastern Kansas, expansive clay pockets near the surface introduce a different failure mode. Consistent volume change regardless of frost depth. Horizontal cracking in Kansas foundations typically traces to clay expansion; the same pattern in Nebraska more often indicates frost-driven hydrostatic pressure.
