How it works

French Drain Installation: how it works and when it's the right call.

Epp Foundation Repair selects depth based on application. Yard-level french drains run 18 to 24 inches deep and intercept surface and shallow subsurface water before it reaches the foundation. Interior footing-level drains run 36 to 48 inches deep, set just inside the footing, captured behind a vapor wall, and connected to a sump pit and pump. Exterior footing-level drains run 60 to 96 inches deep against the outside of the wall during full excavation, sloped to daylight where lot grade allows or to an exterior sump where it doesn't. Every system uses 4-inch perforated PVC, not corrugated black flex pipe, because PVC holds slope across decades and accepts a sewer camera if the line ever needs inspection. The pipe sits in 3/4-inch washed drainage stone, the stone column wraps in non-woven filter fabric to keep loess and clay fines out, and the pipe slopes a minimum eighth of an inch per foot toward the outlet. Without slope to daylight and without a sump as backup, a french drain in flat eastern Nebraska soil is just a long buried bathtub. Dave Epp won't install one without one or the other.

Installation Process

How we install french drain installation.

Step 01.Diagnose Application and Outlet

Dave Epp or a senior Epp Foundation Repair technician walks the site, identifies water sources and low zones, confirms whether slope to daylight exists, and determines whether the application is yard-level surface drainage, interior footing-level pressure relief, or exterior footing-level waterproofing. No french drain gets specified without a confirmed outlet.

Step 02.Locate Utilities and Mark Trench

The crew calls in 811 utility locates 5 business days ahead, marks the trench routing with paint and flags, and confirms the line clears irrigation, gas, electric, and septic. Tree root mapping happens at this step on mature lots.

Step 03.Excavate Trench to Specified Depth

Trench excavation runs 18 to 24 inches for yard drainage, 36 to 48 inches for interior footing depth, and 60 to 96 inches for exterior footing depth. Trench width is 12 to 18 inches for yard work and 18 to 24 inches for footing-level work to give crews room to set pipe and stone.

"A french drain without an outlet is just a long buried bathtub. I won't install one without slope to daylight or a sump pit on the back end. Where does the water go is the first question I ask on any drain, and if there is no answer the system fails inside 5 years and the homeowner thinks french drains don't work. They work; they just need somewhere for the water to go."
