Both transfer your home's weight to load-bearing soil deep below the surface, but they install differently. Push piers use the weight of your home as the reaction force and drive down through soft soils until they reach refusal. Helical piers screw into the ground like a giant screw and develop their capacity from soil shear. In eastern Nebraska and western Iowa loess, both work well. Most of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa sits on wind-deposited loess. Fine, silty soil 10 to 200+ feet deep. Loess holds its structure when dry but loses cohesion rapidly when saturated. Combined with our 35 to 40" annual precipitation, 36 to 42" frost depth, and 60 to 80 freeze-thaw cycles per year, loess foundations see significant cyclical movement. Add poor drainage, clay pockets near the surface, and uncompacted backfill from the original build, and you've described why we see what we see.
