How it works

Soil Stabilization (Ag): how it works and when it's the right call.

Agricultural soil stabilization strengthens the soil under slabs, pads, and foundations on farm and ag sites so they stop settling. Ag sites put heavy loads on the ground that change through the year: a full grain bin, a loaded truck on an equipment pad, a skid steer in a livestock barn. When the soil under that load is soft, wet, or poorly compacted, the concrete above it can settle and crack. Epp uses two main methods, chosen after the site is inspected. For soil near the surface, Epp injects polyurethane through small holes in the slab. The foam fills voids and firms up the soil so the slab is supported again. This is mid soil injection, and Epp's equipment reaches up to 4 feet. When the load needs support from deeper, firmer soil, helical piers carry it down past the weak layer instead. The goal is stabilization. Some lift may be possible depending on conditions, but lift is never promised.

Installation Process

How we install soil stabilization (ag).

Step 01.Site Walk and Crop Calendar

A project manager walks the site with you, looks at each settled slab or foundation, and notes your planting and harvest calendar so the work can be planned around it.

Step 02.Find the Cause

The crew measures where the concrete has moved and looks for the water or soil condition behind it, such as roof runoff toward a bin or a low spot that stays wet. The same checks apply to signs of grain bin foundation failure.

Step 03.Written Scope and Schedule

You receive a Customized Repair Estimate with the method for each area and a schedule that fits your operation.

Step 04.Injection or Pier Installation

For soil near the surface, polyurethane is injected through small holes and the holes are patched. Where deeper support is needed, helical piers on ag sites are installed instead. Work is done in the off season where possible.

"I've watched the same house in Lincoln settle three times in fifteen years because the contractor before us kept lifting the slab without ever fixing the leaking sewer line underneath. The soil was the patient. Nobody had treated the soil."

Soil stabilization firms up the soil so it supports the slab again. Slab lifting uses the same kind of foam to raise a settled section back toward level. On a settled equipment pad, the foam may do both, the same approach used for lifting settled commercial concrete.
