How it works

Crawl Space Sump Pumps: how it works and when it's the right call.

The sump pit sits at the lowest point of the crawl space, where the perimeter drainage system directs collected water. As water fills the pit, a float switch rises with it, and once it reaches a set level, the pump turns on and pushes the water out through a discharge line that carries it well away from the foundation. In an encapsulated crawl space, the pit is fitted with a sealed lid that connects into the surrounding vapor barrier, so the opening for the pump does not become a gap in an otherwise sealed system. Epp Foundation Repair also recommends a battery backup pump alongside the primary unit, since a power outage during a heavy storm is exactly the moment a sump pump is needed most. The backup keeps the system working if the power goes out, which matters even more inside a finished crawl space encapsulation envelope where the homeowner is less likely to check on conditions directly.

Installation Process

How we install crawl space sump pumps.

Step 01.Set the Pit at the Low Point

Epp Foundation Repair positions the sump pit at the actual low point of the crawl space, where the perimeter drainage system naturally directs water, rather than at whichever spot is easiest to reach.

Step 02.Install the Pump and Discharge Line

The pump is set in the pit and connected to a discharge line that carries water away from the foundation to a safe release point in the yard.

Step 03.Seal the Pit Into the Vapor Barrier

A sealed pit lid connects into the surrounding crawl space vapor barrier, keeping the sump pump from becoming an open gap in the sealed crawl space.

Step 04.Add a Battery Backup

Epp Foundation Repair installs a battery backup pump alongside the primary unit so the system keeps working during a power outage, when it is often needed most.

"Fiberglass batts between joists in a vented Nebraska crawl is a five-year decision. Maybe eight if the crawl runs dry. We've pulled out so much sagging, wet, mouse-chewed fiberglass over the decades I don't even photograph it anymore. The modern answer is rigid foam or closed-cell on the walls, and you don't insulate the walls until the encapsulation is finished. Get the sequence wrong and you're paying for the work twice."

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Crawl Space Sump Pumps.

Don't see your question here? Our team is happy to help. Reach out anytime.

Yes. The pit lid connects into the surrounding vapor barrier so the sump system does not leave an open gap in an otherwise sealed crawl space, which would let outside air and humidity back into the crawl.
