What is foundation underpinning?
Not all soil types are able to adequately support a foundation. When this happens the foundation can sink into the soil and become uneven. Signs of this include unlevel floors, and doors and windows that are difficult to open and close. The purpose of foundation underpinning is to transfer the building’s weight to soil that can support it. The process involves drilling heavy duty steel piers deep down into the soil under the foundation. Once they’re in place, hydraulic jacks lift the foundation back up to where it was before.
